PP Hollow Sheet Price: Why Supplier Quotes Differ | Jinmai

Why Do PP Hollow Sheet Prices Vary So Much? A Purchasing Guide

Quick answer: PP hollow sheet prices vary because two sheets with the same thickness and size may not contain the same raw material or the same amount of polypropylene. Virgin or recycled PP, GSM, filler content, thickness tolerance, functional additives, processing, Bestellmenge, packaging and freight can all change the quotation. A low price is not proof of poor material, and a high price is not proof of virgin resin. Buyers should compare written specifications, approved samples and expected cost per use.

Jinmai Plastic manufactures PP hollow sheet and custom corrugated plastic packaging in Guangdong, China. This guide explains how purchasing teams can compare supplier quotations on the same basis and choose a specification that fits the application instead of selecting only by price per sheet.

Why Can PP Hollow Sheet Quotes Be So Different?

A quotation usually reflects more than sheet thickness. The following factors can make two apparently similar products very different.

Price factor What may differ Why it matters
Raw material Reines PP, recycled PP or an agreed blend Affects feedstock cost, consistency, appearance and performance control
GSM Grams of material per square meter Two 4mm sheets can contain very different amounts of material
Thickness and tolerance Nominal thickness versus actual production range Loose tolerances can affect fit, flatness and strength
Fillers and formulation Mineral filler, modifiers, color masterbatch and stabilizers Can change cost, stiffness, impact behavior, folding and welding
Functional grade UV-beständig, antistatisch, conductive or flame-retardant Requires additional formulation and performance control
Surface and printing Corona treatment, color matching, screen or UV printing Adds processing steps and quality requirements
Herstellung Schneiden, creasing, die cutting, Schweißen, handles and dividers The finished packaging cost is not only the sheet cost
Order terms Quantity, packing, delivery term and freight Small runs and complex export packing have different unit costs

Virgin PP vs Recycled PP: What Is the Real Difference?

Virgin polypropylene is newly produced resin with a controlled grade and formulation. Recycled polypropylene is recovered from post-industrial or post-consumer material and processed for reuse. Recycled PP is not automatically unsuitable, but its quality depends on feedstock source, sorting, contamination control, reprocessing history and compounding.

Comparison point Reines PP Recycled PP
Feedstock Controlled new resin grade Recovered material from one or more sources
Consistency Usually easier to control between production batches Can vary unless the recycling and compounding process is well controlled
Color and surface Generally easier to achieve clean color and printing consistency May show color variation, specks or surface differences depending on source
Odor Normally easier to control for sensitive applications May require additional odor and contamination control
Kosten Usually higher raw-material cost Can be lower, although high-quality recycled grades also require sorting and processing
Best use Projects requiring repeatability, appearance, printing or demanding reuse Cost-sensitive or sustainability-driven uses when an approved specification and sample meet the requirement

Important: Material type should be written into the quotation. Terms such asPP material” oder “high quality materialare not specific enough. Ask whether the sheet is virgin PP, post-industrial recycled PP, post-consumer recycled PP or a defined blend.

Why Virgin PP Hollow Sheet Usually Costs More

Virgin resin normally has a higher feedstock cost and offers a more controlled starting material. This can make it easier to maintain color, surface condition, melt behavior and batch-to-batch consistency. For reusable industrial packaging, consistency can matter because the sheet must be cut, creased, welded and assembled repeatedly to the same dimensions.

The extra purchase price may be justified when a buyer needs:

  • Stable color and a clean printable surface
  • Consistent cutting, creasing or welding
  • Reliable divider fit and box dimensions
  • Longer or more predictable reuse
  • Low odor or cleaner appearance
  • A controlled base material for functional additives

Virgin PP alone does not guarantee a good sheet. The manufacturer must still control GSM, extrusion, rib structure, dimensions and processing.

When Recycled PP Can Be a Reasonable Choice

Recycled material can be appropriate when the application allows more variation and the buyer has approved the specification through samples or testing. Examples may include temporary protection, utility partitions, non-critical separators or projects with recycled-content targets.

High-quality recycled PP can perform well when the feedstock is controlled and correctly compounded. The relevant question is not simplyIs recycled material bad?” It isDoes this recycled grade meet the required performance and consistency for this application?”

For this reason, responsible procurement should avoid two assumptions:

  • Do not assume every inexpensive sheet is recycled material.
  • Do not assume every recycled sheet is low quality.

Confirm the declared material, required performance and approved sample instead.

Same Thickness Does Not Mean the Same Sheet: Check GSM

GSM means grams per square meter. It indicates how much material is used over a given sheet area. Thickness describes the height of the hollow structure, while GSM describes material mass. A low-GSM 4mm sheet and a higher-GSM 4mm sheet may have the same nominal thickness but different wall thickness, rib structure, weight and rigidity.

Buyers can estimate sheet weight with this formula:

Sheet weight (kg) = width (m) x length (m) x GSM (g/m2) / 1,000

Example: a 1.2m x 2.0m sheet at 800 GSM should weigh approximately 1.92kg before additional parts or packaging. This simple check helps buyers compare quotations and inspect incoming goods.

When comparing price, request both thickness and target GSM, including acceptable tolerances. Do not compare one supplier’s price per sheet with another supplier’s price per kilogram without converting both to the same basis.

Fillers Can Change Both Price and Performance

Some formulations use mineral fillers or other additives to adjust cost, stiffness, processing or appearance. Fillers are not automatically evidence of poor manufacturing; they can be part of a deliberate formulation. However, excessive or unsuitable filler may affect impact resistance, folding endurance, Schweißen, edge cracking and reuse life.

For an application where durability matters, ask the supplier to confirm the material formulation and test the finished structure. A sheet that feels stiff when new may not necessarily have the best impact resistance or fold life.

Functional Additives Increase the Quotation

Standard PP hollow sheet and functional sheet should not be compared as if they were identical. Additional formulations and controls may be required for:

  • UV resistance for outdoor exposure
  • Anti-static or conductive performance for electronics packaging
  • Flame-retardant requirements
  • Specific colors or color matching
  • Printing adhesion and corona treatment

For ESD packaging, request a target surface-resistance range and testing method. The word “antistatisch” by itself is not a complete performance specification.

Processing and Box Structure Also Affect Price

A flat sheet quotation cannot be compared directly with a finished corrugated plastic box. Finished packaging may include design, sampling, Schneiden, creasing, Schweißen, Drucken, handles, Kantenbindung, hook-and-loop closures, reinforcement and internal dividers.

Box structure also changes material efficiency. A well-designed structure may achieve the required performance with less weight than a poorly designed thicker sheet. Buyers should compare the complete finished specification rather than only the raw-sheet thickness.

Order Quantity, Packing and Freight Matter

Extrusion, color changes, printing setup and die-cutting all involve setup time and material. A small custom order normally has a higher unit cost than a stable production run. Export packing, pallet requirements, container utilization and delivery terms also affect the landed cost.

When comparing suppliers, make sure all quotations use the same trade term, destination, packing method and quantity. An EXW price, FOB price and delivered price are not directly comparable.

The Cheapest Sheet May Not Have the Lowest Cost per Use

For reusable packaging, purchasing price is only the first cost. A more useful calculation is:

Estimated packaging cost per use = purchase price / successful reuse cycles

A cheaper box that fails after a few trips may cost more per use than a better-controlled box that survives repeated turnover. Also consider product damage, repacking labor, production interruption and replacement frequency.

Buyers should define a reasonable reuse target and test the sample under actual handling and stacking conditions.

How Procurement Teams Should Compare PP Hollow Sheet Quotes

Send the same request sheet to every supplier and ask them to complete every field.

Item to confirm What the quotation should state
Anwendung Sign, flat sheet, divider, layer pad, box or pallet sleeve
Material Reines PP, recycled PP or defined blend; recycled source if important
Dicke Nominal thickness and tolerance
GSM Target GSM and weight tolerance
Größe Finished dimensions and tolerance
Farbe Standard color or approved color sample
Functional grade UV, ESD, conductive or flame-retardant target and test method
Processing Drucken, Schneiden, creasing, Schweißen, handles, dividers and hardware
Quantity Order quantity and quantity tolerance
Quality evidence Approved sample, weight check, dimensions and relevant test report
Packing and delivery Pallet, carton, trade term, destination and lead time
Acceptance criteria How non-conforming material will be handled

A Practical Sample-Approval Process

  1. Define the product, load, dimensions, environment and reuse target.
  2. Request a written material, thickness and GSM specification.
  3. Receive a sample made to the proposed production specification.
  4. Check sheet weight, Dicke, Größe, Farbe, odor and surface.
  5. Test folding, Schweißen, Drucken, divider fit, loading and stacking as applicable.
  6. Approve the sample and record it as the production reference.
  7. Agree on incoming inspection and acceptable tolerances before mass production.

This process is more reliable than judging material from photographs or price alone.

How Jinmai Helps Buyers Compare the Right Specification

Jinmai does not recommend comparing PP hollow sheet only by thickness. We review the application, material option, GSM, sheet size, Farbe, processing, load and reuse requirement together. For projects that require virgin PP, the quotation and sample can be prepared against an agreed virgin-material specification. Recycled or blended options should be identified and approved separately rather than substituted without agreement.

Before quotation, send the current packaging photo or drawing, product size and weight, quantity per box, stacking condition, target reuse, functional requirements and order quantity. Jinmai can then recommend a starting specification for sampling.

FAQ

Why is one PP hollow sheet supplier much cheaper than another?

The reason may be material type, lower GSM, looser thickness tolerance, different additives, simpler processing, higher order quantity or a different freight term. Price alone cannot identify the cause; compare the written specification.

Can I identify virgin and recycled PP by appearance?

Appearance, color or odor may provide clues, but they are not reliable proof. Ask for a material declaration, approved sample and relevant testing when material origin is important.

Is recycled PP hollow sheet always weaker?

No. Performance depends on feedstock quality, contamination control, formulation and processing. Some recycled or blended grades can meet demanding applications, while inconsistent grades may show greater variation.

Does a thicker sheet always cost more?

Not necessarily. Dicke, GSM and formulation must be considered together. A thicker low-GSM sheet may contain less material than a thinner high-GSM sheet.

Should I always choose virgin PP?

Choose according to the application. Virgin PP is often preferred for consistency, appearance, printing and demanding reuse. A controlled recycled grade may be suitable for cost-sensitive or sustainability-focused applications after testing.

Does virgin PP automatically mean food-grade material?

No. Food-contact or other regulated applications require the correct compliant grade and documentation. “Virgindescribes material history, not regulatory approval.
