PP Hollow Sheet Thickness Guide: 2mm to 10mm | Jinmai

PP Hollow Sheet Thickness Guide: How to Choose for Packaging, Signs and Protection

Quick answer: There is no singlebestPP hollow sheet thickness. As an initial guide, 2mm-3mm suits light liners and temporary protection, 4mm is widely used for printed coroplast signs and light partitions, 5mm-6mm is a practical starting range for reusable boxes and dividers, and 8mm-10mm may suit larger panels or packaging that needs more rigidity. The final specification should also be checked against GSM, flute direction, finished size, product load, stacking conditions and expected reuse.

Jinmai Plastic manufactures PP hollow sheet and custom corrugated plastic packaging in Guangdong, China. This guide is based on the questions packaging buyers commonly need to answer before a sheet, box or divider can be specified.

Reviewed by the Jinmai Plastic packaging team. Thickness ranges below are selection starting points, not guaranteed load ratings. Final specifications should be confirmed by sample or application testing.

PP Hollow Sheet Thickness Chart

Dicke Practical starting applications What buyers should confirm
2mm-3mm Light liners, backing boards, temporary partitions and surface protection Finished size, required flatness and handling frequency
4mm Printed coroplast signs, yard signs, display boards and light dividers GSM, flute direction, print method and H-stake compatibility
5mm-6mm Reusable boxes, Trenneinsätze, layer pads and parts packaging Product weight, box size, stacking and reuse cycles
8mm-10mm Larger panels, stronger layer pads, pallet sleeves and packaging requiring more rigidity Unsupported span, total load, structure and weight trade-off
12mm Special industrial protection or custom packaging structures Project-specific design, processing and validation

This chart is a quotation starting point rather than an engineering guarantee. Two sheets with the same thickness may perform differently when their GSM, rib spacing, raw-material formulation or sheet structure differs.

How to Choose Thickness in Six Steps

1. Define the application

Start with the finished use: flat sheet, printed sign, box, divider, layer pad, pallet sleeve or protection panel. A 4mm sheet that works well for a sign may not be the right specification for a reusable parts box.

2. Confirm the finished size

Larger sheets and wider unsupported spans usually need more rigidity. Provide the final sheet dimensions or the box’s inner and outer dimensions, not only the raw-sheet thickness.

3. Provide the product load and stacking condition

For packaging, specify the weight per item, quantity per box, total load, stacking height and whether the box will be palletized. Static warehouse stacking and repeated manual turnover place different demands on a package.

4. Estimate handling and reuse

Consider how often the package will be folded, carried, cleaned, transported or returned. Reusable packaging may need a different GSM, joint method or reinforcement even when the nominal thickness stays the same.

5. Compare thickness with GSM and flute direction

Thickness describes the sheet height. GSM describes material weight per square meter. Flute direction affects bending behavior, folding and how an H stake enters a printed sign. These three factors should be reviewed together.

6. Add processing and functional requirements

Drucken, die cutting, creasing, Schweißen, handles, edge binding and divider slots all affect the finished structure. UV resistance, anti-static or conductive performance is a material requirement and should not be assumed from thickness alone.

4mm vs 6mm vs 10mm PP Hollow Sheet

Option Main advantage Typical direction Main trade-off
4mm Lightweight and economical Printed signs, display boards, light partitions and selected light-duty packaging Less rigidity over large spans or under higher loads
6mm More stiffness while remaining manageable Reusable boxes, dividers, layer pads and larger printed panels Higher material weight and cost than 4mm
10mm Greater rigidity for demanding structures Larger panels, stronger packaging components and selected outdoor displays More weight, higher cost and different processing or support hardware may be required

The thickest option is not automatically the best value. A well-designed 6mm box may perform better for a specific job than a poorly designed 10mm box because folds, joints, handles, dividers, reinforcement and GSM also affect performance.

Thickness for Reusable Packaging Boxes

For a corrugated plastic box, select thickness together with box dimensions, load, stacking and handling method.

Packaging condition Initial selection direction
Small box for lightweight products 4mm-5mm may be evaluated
General reusable turnover box 5mm-6mm is a practical starting range
Larger box or frequent handling 6mm-8mm may be evaluated
Heavy parts or palletized packaging 8mm-10mm or a reinforced structure may be considered
Box with internal cells Match divider thickness and slot design to the product and box size

These ranges do not replace a load test. For a custom project, Jinmai can review the product dimensions, weight, quantity per box and stacking condition before recommending a sample structure.

Thickness for Divider Inserts

Divider inserts need enough stiffness to keep parts separated without using unnecessary internal space. A divider that is too thin may bend or release from its slots. A divider that is unnecessarily thick reduces cell space and increases material use.

For an accurate divider recommendation, provide:

  • Product dimensions and weight
  • Number of cells and loading direction
  • Box inner dimensions
  • Slot depth and required fit
  • Whether dividers are fixed or removable
  • Handling and reuse frequency
  • Anti-static or conductive requirements

For electronics, PCB assemblies, connectors and precision components, ESD performance should be specified separately from thickness. Jinmai can process anti-static or conductive PP hollow sheet into boxes and knife-card dividers when the target requirement is confirmed.

Thickness for Printed Coroplast Signs

Printed sign thickness depends on finished size, installation method, wind exposure, support spacing and required service life.

Sign application Common selection direction
Small indoor or temporary display 3mm-4mm may be suitable
Standard yard sign with H stake 4mm is a common starting point
Larger or more rigid printed panel 6mm may be evaluated
Thick display or special support structure 10mm may be evaluated with matching hardware

Jinmai’s printed PP hollow sheet projects commonly use 4mm, 6mm or 10mm sheet. H stakes or other support hardware can be supplied for compatible projects, but the wire size, flute direction, channel spacing and finished sign dimensions must be confirmed before production. A thicker sheet alone does not guarantee better outdoor life; ink system, UV exposure, wind load and installation also matter.

Thickness for Layer Pads and Protection Panels

For layer pads, separators and surface protection, buyers should consider the supported area, pallet pattern, edge exposure, cleaning method and whether the sheet is used once or repeatedly.

  • Thin sheets may suit liners, dust barriers and temporary surface protection.
  • Medium thicknesses may suit reusable separators and general layer pads.
  • Thicker or higher-GSM structures may suit larger spans, repeated handling or more demanding pallet systems.

If a layer pad must carry concentrated loads or bridge gaps, provide a pallet layout or drawing. Thickness alone is not enough to predict deflection.

Why GSM and Sheet Structure Matter

Two 6mm sheets are not necessarily equivalent. One may use more polypropylene per square meter, a different rib pattern or a different material formulation. This can change bending resistance, compression behavior, weld strength, weight and price.

When comparing quotations, ask suppliers to confirm:

  • Nominal thickness and tolerance
  • Target GSM or weight tolerance
  • Sheet dimensions and flute direction
  • Virgin, recycled or specified material formulation
  • Surface treatment for printing or bonding
  • Required functional grade
  • Test method or approved sample for the finished application

Comparing only price per sheet can be misleading if the GSM and finished specification are different.

When a Sample Test Is Necessary

A sample or prototype is especially useful when the package is large, the load is high, boxes will be stacked, the product is fragile, the divider fit is critical, the project has ESD requirements, or the package will be reused many times.

A practical validation can check:

  1. Fit and usable internal dimensions
  2. Bending or bulging under the intended load
  3. Stacking stability
  4. Handle, weld and fold performance
  5. Divider slot retention
  6. Printing and hardware compatibility
  7. Real handling, transport or cleaning conditions

This step turns a thickness recommendation into an application-specific specification.

What Jinmai Needs to Recommend a Thickness

Send the following information for a more useful recommendation:

  1. Anwendung: sheet, sign, box, divider, layer pad or pallet sleeve
  2. Product dimensions and weight
  3. Required sheet size or box dimensions
  4. Quantity per box and total load
  5. Stacking, palletizing and transport conditions
  6. Expected reuse frequency
  7. Indoor or outdoor environment
  8. Printing and processing requirements
  9. Antistatisch, conductive, UV-resistant or other functional requirements
  10. Target quantity, drawing, sample or current packaging photo

Jinmai can then recommend a starting thickness, GSM and structure for sampling instead of quoting from thickness alone.

Common Thickness Selection Mistakes

Buying only by the lowest sheet price

A lower-GSM sheet may look similar in a quotation but behave differently in the finished package. Compare the complete specification and expected cost per use.

Choosing the thickest sheet automatically

Extra thickness can add cost and weight without solving weak joints, poor divider fit or an unsuitable box design.

Ignoring flute direction

Flute direction affects bending, folds and H-stake insertion. It should be marked on drawings for signs, dividers and structural packaging parts.

Treating functional grades as a thickness choice

UV resistance and ESD performance come from material formulation and processing. They must be specified and verified separately.

FAQ

What is the most common PP hollow sheet thickness?

There is no single most common thickness for every use. 4mm is widely used for printed signs, while 5mm-6mm is a practical starting range for many reusable boxes, divider inserts and layer pads.

Is 4mm PP hollow sheet strong enough for packaging?

It can be suitable for light-duty packaging, liners or partitions. For a reusable box, confirm the product load, finished size, GSM, box structure and stacking condition before deciding.

Is 10mm coroplast sheet better than 4mm?

10mm is generally more rigid, but it is heavier and usually costs more. It is useful only when the size, load or support method benefits from the additional rigidity.

Should I choose thickness or GSM first?

Start with the application and required performance, then select thickness and GSM together. A thickness without GSM, structure and load information is not a complete specification.

Can anti-static PP hollow sheet be made in different thicknesses?

Ja. Anti-static or conductive options can be customized for project requirements. Buyers should confirm the target ESD performance, application and test requirement before production.

Can Jinmai provide 4mm, 6mm and 10mm printed sheets with H stakes?

Jinmai commonly handles printed hollow sheet projects in 4mm, 6mm and 10mm. Compatible H stakes or support hardware can be discussed after the sign size, flute direction, channel spacing and installation method are confirmed.
