Virgin PP alone does not guarantee a good sheet. The manufacturer must still control GSM, extrusion, rib structure, dimensions and processing.
When Recycled PP Can Be a Reasonable Choice
Recycled material can be appropriate when the application allows more variation and the buyer has approved the specification through samples or testing. Examples may include temporary protection, utility partitions, non-critical separators or projects with recycled-content targets.
High-quality recycled PP can perform well when the feedstock is controlled and correctly compounded. The relevant question is not simply “Is recycled material bad?” It is “Does this recycled grade meet the required performance and consistency for this application?”
For this reason, responsible procurement should avoid two assumptions:
- Do not assume every inexpensive sheet is recycled material.
- Do not assume every recycled sheet is low quality.
Confirm the declared material, required performance and approved sample instead.
Same Thickness Does Not Mean the Same Sheet: Check GSM
GSM means grams per square meter. It indicates how much material is used over a given sheet area. Thickness describes the height of the hollow structure, while GSM describes material mass. A low-GSM 4mm sheet and a higher-GSM 4mm sheet may have the same nominal thickness but different wall thickness, rib structure, weight and rigidity.
Buyers can estimate sheet weight with this formula:
Sheet weight (kg) = width (m) x length (m) x GSM (g/m2) / 1,000
Example: a 1.2m x 2.0m sheet at 800 GSM should weigh approximately 1.92kg before additional parts or packaging. This simple check helps buyers compare quotations and inspect incoming goods.
When comparing price, request both thickness and target GSM, including acceptable tolerances. Do not compare one supplier’s price per sheet with another supplier’s price per kilogram without converting both to the same basis.

Fillers are not automatically evidence of poor manufacturing; they can be part of a deliberate formulation.
