Reviewing PP corrugated packaging against ANSI/ESD S541-2026 starts with the approved application, the governing edition and the evidence for the actual box-and-divider configuration. Ask your ESD program owner to identify the requirements that apply, then map each requirement to a report, an approved drawing and a recorded decision. Changing the year on a specification does not perform that review.
EOS/ESD Association now lists ANSI/ESD S541-2026, its packaging-material standard supporting ESD control programs. With the EOS/ESD Symposium scheduled for September 28–30, 2026, in Frisco, Texas, this is a useful week to collect unresolved supplier questions before your next packaging review.
This guide provides a purchasing workflow for existing approvals and new quotations. Use the official standard or its redline for the actual requirements and edition-by-edition changes.
What can buyers confirm about the 2026 edition?
The official product page confirms the edition and offers a redline comparison. Its public table of contents identifies the following topics:
| Publicly confirmed topic | Useful purchasing question |
|---|---|
| Applications inside and outside an ESD protected area, or EPA | Where will the package be opened, handled, stored and transported? |
| Resistance classifications and shielding properties | Which functions have been assigned to the box, dividers and any inner packaging? |
| Technical requirements, material identification and traceability | Which report and production reference support the item being ordered? |
| An informative annex on low charging and a revision-history annex | What does the authorized edition comparison mean for the existing specification? |
A contents page establishes what the document covers; it does not establish every requirement or what changed from 2019. Older educational summaries should not be used as a substitute for the current text. In particular, do not copy an older resistance table into a purchase order and relabel it “2026.”
How should you review an existing PP box approval?
1. Freeze the current approval record
Collect the current purchase specification, customer requirements, package drawing, bill of materials, approved sample reference and supporting reports. Record the edition each document cites, including the edition of each test method. A report dated in 2026 may still use an earlier method revision.
Also identify the next affected order or production lot. That gives purchasing a practical decision point: what needs to be resolved before this order is released?
If you are creating a specification for the first time, use our ESD packaging specification guide. This review starts with an existing approval or supplier submission.
2. Compare requirements before requesting tests
Have the customer or ESD program owner confirm the governing documents and review the official redline. For each applicable change or unresolved requirement, record the affected packaging component and the evidence already available.
An older report is still a record of what was tested. Whether it supports the current purchase depends on its scope, the current requirement and the approved configuration. The review should produce a reasoned decision to retain evidence, obtain clarification or perform additional evaluation. Avoid ordering an undefined “complete ESD retest.”
3. Match evidence to the assembled package
For a PP corrugated box, create separate entries for the outer panels, lid, divider set, liners, fastening details and any inner bag. Identify direct contact with the part and the intended role of each component.
The supplier might provide a result for a flat sheet while the order covers a converted box with cut edges, joints, handles and a different divider layout. Record that difference. Ask the responsible reviewer whether the sheet evidence covers the proposed application and what further evidence is needed.
4. Record the release decision and its scope
Close the review with the approved drawing revision, material references, accepted reports, permitted application and the responsible approver. Record unresolved items with an owner and due date. Purchasing should be able to tell exactly which configuration it can order.
Keep the review tied to the affected product and order. A decision for one box should not quietly become an approval for every thickness, formulation or insert sold under the same material name.
What evidence should the supplier submission contain?
The following is a buyer-created evidence checklist, not a reproduction of S541 or a list of newly introduced 2026 requirements. Select the applicable rows with the responsible technical reviewer.
| Review item | Request from the supplier | Question to resolve before release |
|---|---|---|
| Test-object identity | Sample ID, photos, drawing revision and material reference | Does the tested object match this order? |
| Method and conditions | Method designation and revision, conditioning, apparatus and measurement locations | Can the reviewer interpret the result against the agreed requirement? |
| Report results | Actual reported values, units, acceptance reference and laboratory identity | What passed, under which conditions, and for which specimen? |
| Packaging functions | Evidence addressing the functions assigned to each relevant component | Is a material result being stretched into an unsupported system claim? |
| Production traceability | Link between the approved reference, supplied configuration and manufacturing lot | Can receiving identify what arrived? |
| Continued use and changes | Agreed verification, cleaning, repair and change-notification records | What triggers review after the original approval? |
Download the approval review worksheet (CSV). Use its 11 review rows to record the current reference, applicable requirement, evidence received, gap, owner and technical disposition. Open it in your preferred spreadsheet editor; the worksheet does not assign an automatic pass or fail.
For resistance testing, distinguish the method’s measurement geometry from a convenient shop-floor measurement. ESDA describes different methods for surface resistance, volume resistance and two-point resistance; their results should be interpreted within their respective scopes. See ESDA’s overview of standards and test methods.
Does a conductive PP sheet report prove shielding?
A conductive material designation or an isolated resistance result does not, by itself, approve the assembled box’s shielding performance. Ask which protective function the evidence addresses and which package configuration it represents.
ESDA’s packaging fundamentals explains that resistance, charging behavior and shielding address different issues. It also notes that resistance does not necessarily predict low-charging behavior. That educational distinction helps buyers read reports; the governing standard and project requirements determine acceptance.
Pay attention to the test object’s scope. ESDA lists ANSI/ESD STM11.31 as a discharge-shielding test method for bags. A bag result should not be presented as approval of a rigid PP box. If the packaging uses an inner shielding bag, document that bag and how it is used. If the outer box is expected to provide shielding, have the technical reviewer and laboratory agree how that claim will be evaluated. See the official laboratory document list.

Worked review: an existing box with a changed divider
Consider a fictional purchasing example, not a Jinmai customer result. A buyer has approved a reusable PP box with a 12-cell divider. The next order changes to a 16-cell divider and names S541-2026. The supplier attaches the same sheet resistance report used for the previous order.
The evidence review would look like this:
| File item | Observation | Recommended next action |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase specification | Standard edition reference changed | Confirm the governing edition and document the technical comparison |
| Box drawing | Outer box is unchanged | Preserve its existing approval reference while checking relevant requirement changes |
| Divider drawing | Cell count and contact locations changed | Identify the new revision and obtain the reviewer’s evidence decision |
| Sheet report | Describes a material specimen | Establish whether it represents the ordered material and supports the changed configuration |
| Release record | New divider is not yet covered | Record the final disposition before releasing that configuration |
The useful outcome is a traceable decision. The reviewer may retain some evidence and request targeted evaluation for the changed elements. Neither an unchanged sheet name nor a new standard year answers that question alone.
A supplier request you can adapt
Use this request with your approved drawing and the requirements selected by your ESD program owner:
Please review the attached PP corrugated box and divider approval package for our proposed order.
Identify the governing standard editions and customer requirements used in your submission. List the box, lid, divider and any inner-packaging references, including the current drawing revisions.
For each applicable protective function, identify the supporting report, tested object, test-method revision, conditioning, results and acceptance reference. State any differences between the tested specimen and the configuration quoted.
Identify unresolved evidence, proposed additional evaluation, production traceability and changes that require notification. Separate sample, testing and production timing in the quotation.
Our technical reviewer will record acceptance of the specified configuration before order release.
For reusable packaging, add the intended cleaning process, handling route and repair policy. Agree how these conditions enter the qualification and verification plans selected by the responsible ESD program owner. A spreadsheet marked “complete” should mean the requested records are present; the technical approval remains a separate decision.
Questions buyers ask
Does an older S541 report automatically approve a 2026 order?
아니요. Check the governing edition, test-method revision, specimen and configuration, then document whether the evidence supports the current requirement. The date printed on a report is only one part of that review.
Do we need to replace every box because a new edition is published?
Start with a documented impact review. Ask the customer and ESD program owner which requirements apply to the existing use, then decide what action the evidence supports. Publication alone does not describe the condition or suitability of your installed boxes.
Is a black PP box evidence of ESD performance?
Color is an identification feature. Approval needs evidence for the specified material and packaging function. Match the report to the actual box and divider configuration.
Can one report cover several box or divider designs?
It may support more than one configuration when its applicability is established and accepted. Ask the reviewer to identify the covered designs and the basis for that decision; do not assume that all products sharing a resin description are covered.
Where should we check the changes from S541-2019?
Use the official S541-2026 standard and redline offered by EOS/ESD Association. Record the relevant changes in your approval file. This purchasing guide does not supply a clause-by-clause comparison.
